1. Philosophies of Education
2. Philosophy of education colloqium (mandatory for my dept...we gather once a week to hear visiting professors in the field speak...good chewy cookies and juice provided =)
3. Critical approaches to literature (it's a contemporary American poetry focus, the professor is also a poet and is going to invite her poet friends to read for our class!)
4. Psychological Anthropology (how culture affects perception, cognition)
5. Intro to cultural studies
The last one is my favorite so far. Cultural studies seems to be a mish-mash of every discipline in the humanities I could think of. We're going to watch films, talk about pop culture alongside reading cultural theory. According to Wikipedia, cultural studies "seek to understand the ways in which meaning is generated, disseminated, and produced through various practices, beliefs, institutions, and political, economic, or social structures within a given culture." And so specifically, the class will also explore how cultural studies can be incorporated into education, which is ideally what my classroom would be all about...less rigid discipline divides and more fluidity among fields of knowledge for greater critical thinking skills that are relevant to life...
Most of my classes are in the afternoon/evening. My day usually starts with being woken up by Henry in the morning bc he has to get to school around 830. And then I go back to sleep til 11ish. Breakfast, do homework, go to the pool (or jump rope in the apt...lol...one day, the ppl downstairs are gonna complain). And then I head for campus usually reading for class on the 40 minute subway ride.
This Friday I had off (starting next Friday I will be co-teaching Philosophy to 6th graders at Columbia Secondary...interesting right?), so I took the day to relax. I made some paprika eggs on whole wheat roll with Manchego cheese for breakfast.
And then got excited about having a 'me' day...which I haven't had for a while...so I went thrifting at buffalo exchange in Chelsea. I've sold so much stuff there as to accumulate ~100 bucks worth of store credit.
I also couldn't stop myself from oogling at goodies at Trader Joe's. Bought among other things, some figs, rustic Italian bread, pepper parmesean cheese, and gorgonzola crackers. Came home and arranged a smattering for me and my baby...
Didn't do much homework the whole day...I've been good about homework, trying to be as productive as possible on the weekdays so I can relax on the weekends. But then I'll be the madwoman reading Derrida on the subway...that man is a piece of shit...so convoluted just for the sake of it.
