To emigrate is to become a foreigner in two places at once...

The loveliest, most bittersweet immigrant fiction I've read in a while.  Tender characters, quiet suffering, descriptions of the power of daily rituals, Brooklyn brings together the worlds of 1950s working class America and provincial Ireland. Eilis is a girl who has to choose between the two and no matter the choice, leaving the other means shutting out a part of herself.
