Pre-Columbian Native American tribal territories

wow, this is completely mind-blowing: there are ~562 distinct Native American tribes before 1492. Seeing the way their 'state' territories are marked compared with the current demarcation is both bewildering and saddening. Native life was one of constant fighting for their own borders as well as, later on, against white encroachment. The later lumping of all Natives into plains reservations is probably as smart as Europe's carving of post-colonial African statehood.
